A sustainable water supply is a cornerstone of sustainable communities. After years of relative neglect in which Canadian communities and governments concentrated on building ever bigger and ever more complex systems to withdraw, treat and distribute water, the focus is beginning to shift to meeting the challenges of a sustainable water supply. Today’s water supply managers are faced with the challenges of achieving water efficiency, paying for new and aging infrastructure, and delivering safe, efficient services to consumers.

Improving water-supply management often requires reforms in governance and changes to utility structures. Relatively little information is available for non-specialists on this issue. The Program’s focus has been on good governance in the context of water and wastewater restructuring.
